Population history

The Great Leap Forward. The world population growth rate, which had been increasing, dived from 1.9% to 1.3%. Looking at absolute growth, instead of relative growth, you can draw a trend line over the dip and then directly interpret the area of the dip below trend as number of actual and potential lives destroyed.
